Evening Walks
Call for Evening Walks All of our walks are led by volunteers. See below for information on how to lead an evening walk with the group, with full support from the committee.
In addition to the usual programme of Saturday and Sunday walks, we also meet weekly for an evening walk.
- Starting 7pm
- Every week
- Monday, Tuesday Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday evening
- Inner London, normally tube to tube
- Between 3 and 5 miles (5km to 8km)
- Leisurely pace
- Finishing in the pub
- All weather
Please see the Upcoming Walks listing, the Ramblers Walks Finder or Meetup for the upcoming walks.
Joining a Walk
Just turn up! There is no need to book or let us know. We’ll see you at the start of the walk.
You can tell us you’re coming via our MeetUp page (link on each walk description). It is not mandatory to do this in advance, but it is appreciated as it helps boost our MeetUp profile. Please do not directly contact the leader just to say you’re coming. They’ll see you on the day! Our walk leaders are all volunteers who lead walks in their spare time.
We try to leave on time shortly after 7pm. Please do allow enough time for your journey to the start, and time to find us somewhere near the station entrance. We won’t be checking for every RSVP to turn up because we know your plans might have changed at the last minute.
We have further resources if you are new to the group:
If you have been on 3 walks with the group and you are enjoying it, we ask that you join the national Ramblers Association, our parent orgaisation.
For the evening walks we normally stay on paved surfaces or gravel tracks, but occasionally we will find a muddy puddle in a park. Please wear sensible shoes and bring a bottle of water. Umbrellas welcome if accompanied by a careful owner.
The walks are graded as leisurely. Sometimes, however, the pace is faster than some people expect for a city walk. For more information see the walks difficulty guidelines.
Leading a Walk
If you have never led a walk before, an evening walk is often a good way to start. The committee will be happy to provide any support for new or experienced leaders alike. We can provide walking routes, help find a pub, and we can join the walk in case you need any support on the day. Please reach out to midweek-walks@metropolitan-walkers.org.uk if you have any questions.
It’s easy to get started! Take one evening, with a friend or by yourself, and walk the proposed route. Some people prefer to plan first, others will just walk in an area they are already familiar. Once you have scouted the route, you are ready to submit it for the programme.
We also have these existing resources to help leaders:
- What to expect when you lead your first walk
- Advice for walk leaders
- Find a walking route
- Using Walks Manager to submit a walk
When you are ready please submit a walk via Walks Manager!
Groups walking is classified as a low risk activity, and as such our procedures are designed to make it as easy as possible to lead a walk without unnecessary paperwork or administration. Although the Ramblers do provide training and resources, there is no formal qualification process.
Speak to one of our volunteers on a walk if you are curious about how to get started, or if you want any help.
