Weekend Away Advice
Many people who come on the weekends away don’t know anyone else until the weekend itself, but they are certainly a great way of getting to know people. We’d advice participants to try several of our day walks before they join a weekend so they can judge walk grades, pace etc.
You must be a member of the Metropolitan Walkers to join one of our weekends away!
Many of our weekends away are in hilly/mountainous areas, please refer to our walking info.
If you’d like to lead a weekend away, please contact the Weekends Away Coordinator to discuss your ideas & dates, we aim to have as many different weekends of different walk grades as possible.
Almost all weekends away involve booking your own accommodation and transport too, you can stay somewhere at a suitable price for you. If you wanted to organise to share accommodation with someone else, post something on the forum in reply to the specific weekend posting. You will need to register to join the forum.
Occasionally a weekend away will have specific accommodation such as a YHA Hostel, where a deposit can be paid & there will be same sex room sharing. Walk leaders should consider if they release the exact location, it may be wise to deter people from booking their own accommodation. An email address should always be posted so people with specific needs can make requests.
We have charitable membership of the Youth Hostel Association, we get group discounts on accommodation. Contact the Weekends Away Coordinator for the YHA membership number. You will need to borrow the YHA card to show the hostel reception.
Weekends Away Walk Leaders should consider an online form such as Google Forms. This will create a schedule of pre-determined requirements. Check that the participants do not have access to the collected data by turning off the review options. The Ramblers membership number should be requested so this can be verified by the Membership Secretary.
Metropolitan Walkers Bank Account
We now have access to Ramblers bank account, that can be used to pay deposits for accommodation, transport etc.
Contact the Weekend Away co-ordinator with your plan.
We can only arrange electronic bank transfers so we can either pay companies directly, or reimburse the trip organiser. We need receipts or invoices so we can keep records for the Ramblers. Contact the Treasurer to arrange.
We can’t take cash out of the bank account. So if you will need cash for taxis or buses for example, it's best to ask people to bring the cash to the weekend away, or pay in cash, get a receipt, and get reimbursed.
Individuals signing up can pay a deposit to the bank account using their name as reference.
The bank account can make a small profit. Deposits at the point of signing up are generally non-refundable, after the trip if funds are available we shall try to repay all or some of the deposit.

We have two pairs of two-way long range radios (up to 10Km) which can be borrowed by Weekend Away leaders.
