West Ireland (Clifden) - Fri 25 to Tue 29 August

Postby bencraig » Sun Jan 08, 2017 10:17 pm

NEARLY FINAL DETAILS BELOW - PLEASE WATCH THIS SPACE

Travel is via Knock (Ireland West) airport and hire cars. There's no useful public transport in this area but you all seem to have car shares sorted. We should have some capacity to swap around during the trip though so that you can choose your walks.

There are great coastal and hill walks in the area, plus opportunities for island visits.

Most of you are on these flights:
Friday 25 August: 0755 Stansted to Knock (Ryanair), I'll briefly be in the Premier Inn bar on Thursday night.
Tuesday 29 August: 1955 Knock to Gatwick (Aer Lingus)

For accommodation please book:
Friday, Saturday, Sunday nights accommodation in Clifden
Monday night accommodation in Galway town (so that we get a change of scenery)

Indicative plan is below:

Friday 25th
Leenaun Hill
Introductory hill walk (11km, 740m ascent)
A hill walk overlooking Ireland's only fjord (Killary Harbour)
Drive from Airport via Westport, then lunch in the picturesque village of Leenaun (aka Leenane) where the walking starts shortly after 1pm at the bridge. Cafes are available for lunch.
Various shorter options available, starting at the same time and place.
8pm meet in Clifden town (pub tbc)

Saturday 26th
The Maumturks
Strenuous mountain walk (12.7km, 1050m ascent)
Circular, with cars leaving Clifden at 9am.
A spectacular ridge, staying high from from Maureen to Maumahoge.
Please come properly equipped for remote rugged terrain.
We'll need good weather for a big group doing this, so there will be a different plan if the clouds are low.
Limited dropout options in the first hour or so (with valley options then available, but you'd need a map).

Sunday 27th - Hard Walk
The Twelve Bens area
Very challenging walk (Matt leading, and weather dependent)
Glencoaghan Horseshoe
Mountain walk, 14.3km with 1660m ascent
Linear with car moves needed

Sunday 27th - Moderate walk (Tom leading)
Errisbeg / Dogs Bay / Gorteen Bay
Coastal walk with some hills and great sandy beaches, 15.4km with 470m ascent
Circular, starting from Roundstone, with cars leaving Clifden at 10am
Optional afternoon extra walk near Clifden to Omey island (noting that this is tidal).
Bring swimming kit today if you like that sort of thing.

Monday 28th
Visit Aran islands
Details here shortly
Stay Galway

Tuesday 29th
I propose to lead a bike ride from Galway
Walks today to be arranged during the trip.
There should be a 4pm bus from Galway to Knock if anyone needs it.

My phone number for emergencies only please is +447825376397.
We have 35+ of you coming so please be at the meeting points and don't update me on minor issues.
There is still space available.

Hi all,

I am looking at accommodation - does anyone have a spare room/bed in an apartment or similar?

Cheers, Caroline (Clarke)
