Welcome to the Metropolitan Walkers
The Metropolitan Walkers is a walking group for people in their 20s and 30s who live or work in London.
The group (a Ramblers Association Hike group) was formed in 2001, and has grown rapidly since. The Metropolitan Walkers currently has about 600 members, though not all come on every walk!
We organise four walks most weekends, ranging from 5 to 20 miles in length and shorter city strolls after work most Tuesdays. The walks are varied and include walks in and around London (usually within a one hour train ride) to areas such as the North Downs, South Coast, Chilterns and Thames Path.
All walks are accessible by public transport, which usually means they start and finish at either a tube or train station.
We have an active social programme and organise weekends away. Recent trips have included the Peak District, the Lake District, Edinburgh, Northern Ireland and Jersey. Socials have included eating out, pub crawls and quizzes, classical concerts, ice skating, theatre shows and dancing. Most walks end with a pub stop – a great way to get to know fellow walkers.
The group is run by volunteers. All walks are led by members of the group and we are always looking for new walk leaders. Participation is encouraged.
New members are welcome to come on a couple of walks to try the group before joining. Most walks have several people who haven't been before. To see a list of our upcoming walks, visit the Ramblers' online Groups Walks Finder.
To become a member of the Metropolitan walkers, please click on www.ramblers.org.uk/membership and ensure you specify Metropolitan Walkers as your group or you will be assigned to a group by your postcode. Membership costs just £27.00 per year and new members get one month free if you pay by direct debit. Members can join our socials, weekends away and will receive our social and walks programme via email. You will also receive the ramblers magazine and 'walk Britain' guide.
Unfortunately the Metropolitan Walkers is unable to cater for children on its walks. However, the Inner London Area of the Rambers' Association has recently set up a Families Walking Group, which meets on the first Sunday of every month. You can access their site here.
